Debt Settlement Scams, Exposed on CBS Early Show

Comes as no shock to me. According to a recent GAO report (Government Accounting Office), debt settlement companies have barely a 10% success.

Debt settlement is an option for dealing with debt, but I have 2 rules for when it should be used.

  1. You can come up with the money to settle in 12 months or less, and
  2. Bankruptcy would somehow cost you more, financially, than settling.

FTC Cracks Down on Debt Settlement Firms, It’s About Time!

The Federal Trade Commission, on the heels of a damning investigation by the Government Account Office, has finally issued rules to regulate one of the shadiest industries, Debt Settlement Companies. Debt settlement firms have, for many years, been misleading consumers about the ability to get out of debt and avoid bankruptcy and earning millions of dollars in the process. (more…)

Government Accounting Office Confirms Debt Settlement Companies Mislead Consumers!

The Washington Post recently reported a recent GAO investigation finding that many debt settlement firms are misleading consumers (see this article: Debt-settlement firms misled consumers, GAO report says). You have seen the commercials that make the programs appear to be government sanctioned and making wild claims about the ability to settle debt. The reality is these firms charge large, up front fees, mislead consumers as to the reality of debt settlement, and end up forcing people into bankruptcy after the unwary consumer wasted thousands of dollars on a debt settlement program that was never going to work in the first place.
