Coming January 1; T.S.E. Thrifty Spender Experiment, an Experiment in Lifestyle Control

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

Abstract:

Can a bankruptcy attorney, by choice, make lifestyle changes which that bankruptcy attorney often must advise his middle class and formerly wealthy clients to make in order to survive financial setbacks? What are the real struggles and challenges in making those changes? What changes really are necessary? The goal of T.S.E. is to have the subjects share their challenges, thought process, specific solutions, and failures so those in financial distress have a resource to help manage their situation. Thrifty Spender Experiment: Discretionary vs Non-Discretionary Expenses and Downsizing.

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

There is one limitation to the Thrifty Spender Experiment. For practical reasons (stay married), the experiment will not include actual modification of non-discretionary spending; which really means the experiment will not include major down-sizing. What do I mean?

For most families facing financial distress there are expenses that must be incurred in some way such as expenses related to housing, transportation etc. However, even in those categories, it is often possible to downsize. One can go from a $2,400 mortgage to a $1,200 rental. T.S.E is not going to require me to sell my house and move into a cheaper residence.  But, if I had to do it, I would, and I have done it in the past. So, for purposes of T.S.E. there will be certain Non-Discretionary Expenses (N.D.E.)  that are not subject to the experiment but that in reality would otherwise need to be evaluated as part of a budget. The Thrifty Spending Experiment – The Rules.

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

With any project or experiment, there needs to be some guidelines, principles, and rules. The rules create a framework for the experiment and benchmarks for accountability. So, what are the T.S.E. rules? (Note, it is likely that as the experiment progresses, these rules may be edited from time to time to address circumstances that are unknown at this time). Here are the rules:

–No Criminal Activity. [This rule may seem self evident, but in the realm of "extreme frugality" shoplifting and foraging are acceptable. So this rule exists to prevent wrongful behavior] (more…)

Thrifty Spender Experiment – Selection Letter

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Dear Matt and Nicole Berkus

You have been selected to participate in the Thrifty Spender Experiment (T.S.E.). Who I am is not important, but you may refer to me as your handler. Starting January 1, 2011 and lasting 6 months, you will begin receiving assignments about every two weeks to cut various expenses; success may be rewarded, failure will be punished.

What is T.S.E? Given the difficult economic times and unemployment remaining steady at 9.6%, T.S.E. wants to test and discover real solutions for upwardly mobile middle class individuals and families to cut expenses and weather difficult financial times. (more…)
